The Quality Education Committee (QEC) is the District’s shared decision making group comprised of teachers, support staff, administrators, parents, students and a Board of Education member. One of the topics QEC has been discussing this year is the use of New York State assessments in grades 3-8. These assessments are one piece of the educational puzzle we use to learn about our students and develop instruction that supports all students. We would like to take this opportunity to share some information about changes that have occurred regarding the NYS assessments. The chart below summarizes educator and parent concerns and changes from recent years. As a committee, QEC knows challenges remain related to NYS tests, scoring, and use of data. We feel it is important for us to communicate the purpose of NYS assessments, their use in addressing student needs, and to acknowledge that the State Education Department has listened to the concerns from educators and parents. At Greenville, our teachers and administrators build relationships with our students in order to take into account the whole child when making educational decisions. We feel that these updates will help us to inform local decisions and will allow teachers to reflect on how the district can support learning through professional development. If you have any questions or thoughts for QEC we can be reached at askqec@greenvillecsd.org. You can also check the QEC page of the district’s website for additional information regarding our committee.
Good luck to our Greenville Middle School Odyssey of the Mind Team who will be competing at the state level competition in Binghamton on April 7th. We know you will be Spartan STRONG and represent us well!
