Boys JV and Varsity Basketball: VS Chatham

The first game of the night this past Friday pitted the JV Boys against Chatham. Both teams played well, but Greenville came out on top. The final score was 55-30, great job guys!

The second and final game of the night was the Varsity Boys game. The game was well played by both teams and the fourth quarter was definitely very exciting and the plays kept on the edge of your seat (or in this case, bleachers). There was a very close back and forth lead, by only a point or two for most of this quarter. The final 15 seconds were approaching and we were still down by one point, 65-64. As it got down to the last 5 seconds, Sophomore Ryan McAneny passed the ball to Junior Cole Ackerman and he threw it toward the basket, just in front of the half court line. Junior Liam Krasney caught it right next to the basket and shot as the buzzer went off, making the basket, and securing the win by one point. The final score was 66-65, awesome win Greenville!

High School Gym

View from the new bleachers
GCS design on the new bleachers and new Spartan art

New center of the gym (and basketball court)

The gym remodeling was finally finished, and just in time for winter sports to start! Some updated features of the gym are the bleachers (now only on one half of the gym), the new maroon mats on the walls, the Spartan logos (in the center of the court and above the bleachers) and the new scoreboards. In addition to the Spartan head, I'm sure the girls and boys basketball teams appreciate the "Spartans" and "Lady Spartans" now printed on the floor. Thank you to everyone who was involved in any way for creating a shiny new gym for all of the current and future students to use.

Each grade showed their enthusiasm with cheering and class posters. There was a number displayed at the beginning of the pep rally to text to vote for your favorite class sign; congratulations to the Seniors for winning with your “Kiss our class goodbye” poster! Thank you to Nurse Mackey and the Seniors for putting this all together for us!

Real World Applications in Math
Statistics Through Project Based Learning
Article by Nadia Boyea

If you were to walk into Ms. Gannon's third period class, you would find Juniors Emily Vetere, Alyssa Latta, Nicole Torrey and Senior Abbey Vincent working on hands-on projects for their class, Statistic Through Project Based Learning. This class is made up entirely of projects, all specific to what the students want to explore.
Currently the class is working on creating programs for the calculators. Their most recent finished project was creating a speaker from a styrofoam cup (link below).  When asked what the rest of the year holds, Ms. Gannon explains that, “ depends on the student's interests. Some of the previous projects have been analyzing data from a school lunch survey and even making a chair from corrugated paper, a material commonly used to create cardboard boxes.”
Ms. Gannon is most looking forward to exploring topics with the class that they might not have already learned about, such as coding and STEM. She says the most important part of this class is seeing where the math the students have previously learned is applied in the class. She finds that learning to work as a group and problem solve is also very important to this class.
This course is open to anyone who would like to join. It is not a Regents course but it is a math course that is an option if you would like to continue taking math. Ms. Gannon says there is no part two of this course but she welcomes students that aren't Seniors this year to come back next year to talk about problem solving.

A Day Well-Spent at the Constitutional Convention

By Natalie Wysokowski

On Monday, October 31st, not only were students celebrating Halloween, but a select few were also spending their day acting as political delegates for Mr. Albright's U.S. History and Government class. This is not the first year the Constitutional Convention has taken place, and it's surely not the last. Several students engaged in this all-day event – Nicholas Bucci, Lacie Hotaling, Donal O'Flynn, William Connolly, Jared Spring, Shelby Doren, Maddie Balta, Kaitlyn Stanfield, Madalyn Krasney, Justice Adair, and Gabby Morse. According to Mr. Albright, the purpose of this project is “to help students understand the construction of the constitution.” It's an interesting event that allows students to form their own class government while the “delegates” work together in groups to make decisions such as classroom rights (having the right to eat in class, wear hats, etc.) and understand how to amend the constitution and the overall process of an election. It's a great social opportunity for students as well as an awesome method to expand their knowledge of the development of the U.S. Constitution and its representatives.

Local law enforcement, and Middle/High Student Council

Police Breakfast:
By Shelby Doren
On October 25, 2016, Greenville held a breakfast to honor local law enforcement. The breakfast was organized by the Student Council. Following the breakfast, Greenville Student Council held a Q&A. Students asked questions like, ”what is the worst part of the job?” and  “what is the schooling you had to go through to get to the position you’re in?” Afterwards, we thanked them for coming and for their service.

Greenville’s Very Own Therapy Dog

001.JPG

By Natalie Wysokowski

We are happy to welcome our newest addition to the Greenville Middle School/High School Community, Groucho! She’s a therapy dog in the making, allowing students and staff to not only smile but also strengthen their connection with animals. Her calm aura surely will help brighten the mood of the classroom and support students through any stress. She’s also a great participant and example for Greenville’s psychology elective, in which the psychology students are now in the process of working with her to have a better understanding of their current unit. Thank you to Mr. Katagiri, High School Social Studies/Psychology teacher, for bringing us such a wonderful opportunity that has already left a positive impact on the students of our school!

First storm of the year!
   by: Scott Peters

Last year's winter wasn't as exciting as usual but it looks like we're off to a good start! The first snowstorm of the year is strong enough to stop all afterschool activities including Cross Country. Better put on your gloves and your old winter hat because it looks like a snowy winter is coming our way!

Out of the Darkness
Raising awareness for suicide prevention
By Shelby Dorn

September 24, 2016 was the annual Out of the Darkness walk at Waterfront Park in Hudson, New York to help raise awareness of suicide, and educate people about this disease. Pam Lent, director of this event explained why she has gotten involved in suicide awareness and in this event. “I lost my nephew 12 years ago to suicide. It took up until 5 years ago to realize I needed to do something about this awful disease and to help break the stigma that still haunts a lot of people to this day… We raise our voices to let everyone know they are not alone and can receive the help they deserve.” Lent then explained,  “There are 8 AFSP(American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) chapters in New York State alone. Each chapter covers certain locations throughout their area. In the Capital Region alone we have 4 Walks, 1 Hike, 1(college) Campus Walk, and 2 Survivor Day events scheduled in 2016…” Some ways to break the stigma is changing the language we use about suicide, for example, we no longer say that a person “committed suicide” we now say “died by suicide or death by suicide”. As well, we no longer refer to someone who has died by suicide as “a suicide” in the same way we do not refer to a person who died from a heart attack as “a heart attack”.

Members of the Yellow Ribbon Club at Greenville High School attended the walk to bring awareness to the heartbreak of suicide. Greenville Central School recently experienced this pain with the tragic loss of a Greenville student to suicide, leaving many to wonder, “what more could we have done?” “Why couldn’t he ask for help?” Though these questions will remain unanswered, The Yellow Ribbon Club helps inform students at Greenville that there is always someone to talk to if you are feeling depressed and contemplating suicide. The Yellow Ribbon also has resources on how to get the help you need if you are feeling like suicide is the only answer. For further resources on Out of the Darkness Walks, Trainings, the AFSP has an endless list of training and educational classes which can be found by going to  www.afsp.org. #ghsblog
